Denver ranks as 13th most dog-friendly city in America

It is no surprise to most of us that Denver is a great city for dog ownership.  With plenty of hiking trails, dog parks and pup-friendly patios, it is no wonder that there are more dogs than children in the Mile High City.

National studies agree. On August 25, Smart Asset released its annual review of the dog-friendliest cities in America and Denver came in at 13th.  While this placement is no small feat, it is a significant drop for Denver, which has been one of the top-10 cities in every survey since the report began in 2016, placing as high as 3rd in the past.  One of the reasons that Smart Asset identifies for the ranking decrease is the rising housing costs in Denver.  Smart Asset’s 2019 study states that “across all metrics, Denver does the worst in terms of affordability, as the city is becoming an increasingly desirable place to live.”

Denver’s increasing housing costs and lack of affordability can be a barrier to pet ownership and is something we frequently confront the Dumb Friends League.  It is the reason we provide community resources to help families and their pets stay together.  Check out our community resources page for tips on finding housing with your pet, locating low-cost veterinary care and connecting with a pet food pantry.
